Ive used an engine hoist with a strap around back bone tubes of frame to pick a bike up in the air more than once.
Ive also been known to do the same thing with a backhoe or excavator if im working outside, garage ceilings tend to be too low.

Okay, first off... NO offense
These are the types of things I am trying to get away from! Man, the garage rafters in the house I rent now... I'd barely trust my own 160 pounds with, let alone a KZ1000

Besidez having the above pictured bike lift,I also have a couple of swingarm stands, a stand that lifts my tracker from the frame and a front end standthat lifts from the steering stem. I can add pictures later if needed. Paul

What type of steering stem lift do you have? I have a generic one I bought back when I had my SV1000. I wasn't crazy about it, as it seemed kinda unstable. (the lift, not the bike ;) ) But anyhow, I still have the lift, and tried it on the KZ, but it is not tall enough to lift the bike up at all.

Matt,
I can snap some pictures of it when I get home.. The front end lift is meant to be used with a rear stand and makes it much more stable. I've also found that it's a little short for some of my bikes, so I place the stand on a couple od pieces of scrap 2X12 wood for the extra 1 1/2" or so elevation. I've also entertained the option of merely putting bigger wheels on it to solve the elevation problem.

EDIT:

I think I have a picture here with my Suzuki up on it...

Man. It's the simplest things that I never think of. I swear. :pinch: Thanks man!

 Haha. Yeah... I have this problem where I read things and my brain makes false associations. I saw the part about garage ceiling and, well, yeah.
For this reason, when reading something in a shop manual, I make sure to read it about 83 times.

Wow Bill, that was really an awesome idea! I'm curious, when the bike is fitted with a center stand, does it allow the bike to be rocked back and the front wheel to be lifted high enough up to remove it? If so, that might be something I should add to my tool box.

Of course, I have my Harbor Freight model as well 'cause I refuse to roll around on the ground doing oil changes at my age! :pinch:

I don't have much room in my garage, so my wife bought me an Easy Rizer lift a few years ago for Christmas. I have made bike spacific mounts for my project bikes and I am very happy with it. I also store it like this photo.

2 grey Handy electric lifts and a black air lift. All 3 bought used. I like the electric models because I can stop them at any height.

Over 30 years with z1's, Currently down to only one 75, a j model dragbike, and 2 KZ1000 dragbikes.
