I have a 1980 KZ650LTD.

When I'm cruising at 60, its turning about 5000 RPM's. This seems like its screaming.

Is this a normal crusing RPM?

Sounds pretty much normal. I have always thought the 650's needed a 6th gear. One thing you might try is adding one tooth to your countershaft sprocket. You will sacrifice a little out of the hole acceleration, but it makes the bike nicer at cruising speed.

My '78 650 has the stock gearing, 16/42. It turns about 4700 rpm at 60. I think the LTD's are a bit different, maybe due to a different rear wheel?? But like Gringo said, go up a tooth on the countershaft sprocket.

My 80 650 LTD is doing 70 at 5000 rpm's. 60 is closer to 4500. It still needs another gear though.

My stock 650SR turns 5500 at about 55mph. I wish they came with a 6th, i love the power off the line though

I went with a 38 tooth on the rear and really takes away the want for a sixth gear. I haven't noticed any loss off the line though.

Hey Gringo, does your 650-CSR have the stock sprockets? I've also got the 81 KZ650-CSR, which has a 13T front & a 33T rear - it seems like that would be a world of difference from some of the others having the 16T/42T setup. Another gear would be nice. JMK.

Sounds like your bike uses a 630 chain while the others use a 530 :)

when my 77 was stock, it would be revving 5000 at 100km/h (about 60mph) 6000 rpm=120 km/h, 7000=140km/h ect...

Yep, yer right about my chain; I don't know about the others. JMK.

I bet that your bike don't have a kickstart either :)

The 650 switched to a 630 chain, no kickstart, and a HyVo cam chain around 81, previous models had a kickstart, roller cam chain, and 530 chain. A 750 jug, pistons, and head, would bolt right on your bike :)
