I got a set of 82GPZ cams and when they arrived they weren't marked as to which was intake or exhaust, but they have the timing gears on them but no speedo gear. I have some marks on the cams,R1 and R2 on the other, they also have marks on the time gears and several locations for bolting on to the cam, these read, in,,,Z7ex,,,Z6ex, each twice,, one cam appears to be taller in the lift the other seems to have more duration, which is intake and exhaust. these were supposed to be 82 750gpz items but I thought the 82s still had the speedo gear on the exhaust and the 83 up did not

The 83 GPz750 cam sprockets are marked as described, but I don't know about the 82.
AFAIK, the 82 had a mechanical tach so the exhaust cam would have a tach drive gear on it if it were an 82.

I believe the 83 had more lift and duration than the 82's did.

so these are probably 83 or newer, now the 82 cams as I understand were just KZ750 cams and they bumped the compression to make the GPZ engie, are the 83 cams a different grind ? how do I know which cam goes where ?

They bumped the compression, used different carbs, and cams with greater duration and lift for the non turbo 83-85 GPz750.

I think the manual eaplains how to tell the difference between intake and exhaust, and can be downloaded from kz.mbsween.com/

Agawam I was bored at work yesterday so I was reading thru a 650 Clymer manual. According to it, the exhaust cam should be darker in color because of the way it is heat treated. Any difference in color between the cams you have?

no difference in color, the only differences are the holes they are bolted into and one cam has R1 the other has R2 stamped into it, is it possible that both cams are the same lift and duration, I have measured a bit and they seem to be identacle

my kz750 cams I got with my 750 block have those markings too. also the holes all have different indentations, I think the kz setup is round, one is square, and the other is hexagonal(not sure which is which, but I can check this wknd if anyone wants me to) Im not sure of the yr, as the ebay auction said they came from an 88, but I dont see an 88 kz750 in the kaw parts diagrams:blink: another thing that has me wondering, is the fact that my 650 roller cam chain gear all fits in it, and I thought that 80 was the cut off period of it working with the early 650 stuff (I found this out after the auction)... but my mystery yr 750 stuff is going together the way it should:blink:

found it, the intake cam is bolted to the round holes and the exhaust is bolted in the hex holes

The 1982 GPz750 exhaust camshaft had no tach drive gear.

The intake camshaft bolts to the round holes.

The exhaust camshaft bolts to the square holes.

I not really sure what the hex holes are for...
