Im in South Korea right now, but im still working on my kz650 (77 c1). I want to order parts so when i get home i can have everything on hand and ready to get on the bike.

Now im doing the top end of the motor, and the rollers for the cam chain have some wear, not to bad but i would prefer to replace them now when parts are hard to come by than 7 years from now when my only option is used parts.

Sooo im wondering if i can use the rollers ment for the Z1 that APE makes on a 650 or if i should try to pick up a set of OEM replacements.

Im talking about OEM part numbers
12053-1012 (3 looks like i need 3 of them)
12055-004
12048-1015

orrrr APE parts
12048-001HP
12057-002HP
12057-001HP

Another question...the biggest bike i have played with to this date is a KE 175 (2 stroke). Now i want to use oversized pistions on this rebuild should i use 1mm over pistons or get the wisco 2mm over set. I dont really want to make th bike a speed demon untill have some experiance on it... what is your call on that? Cause i do enjoy living, but my wrist sometimes bypasses my brain.

cant help on the oem or ape parts, but why do you want to go go with bigger pistons? if you are concerned about adding too much power (too much power didnt know there was such a thing:evil:  ) oem 1mm over pistons wont add much, you would get a bigger gain from just doing the rebuild (the 1mm over would just be a tiny boost in power, you may not even notice much of a change compared to a stock (in tune) motor)
the wiseco 2 mm over pistons would be a much bigger jump in power because they also raise the compression ratio (stock 9.5-1, wiseco 10.25-1)
if your pistons and cylinders are in spec, and you dont want a lot of extra power, it would be much easier and cost effective to just hone and re-ring the motor, then you can always go nuts in a few yrs after you get some driving expirience, and make a 650/750 hybrid, get an 810 kit, a set of big cams, bigger carbs... you know the worksB)

Can´t help much on the APE vs.OEM question either, but the cam chain idler sprockets used on the single roller (pre-81) KZ 650s and the single roller 900/1000s are the same even though they have different part numbers, if that´s what you´re asking.

There´s some more info, pics and part numbers in this thread

soooo after some reading I think I have a better idea of what I’m up against...

The 3 sprockets inside the cam chain system are all the same part number (12053-1012). Now these have been all but 100% confirmed to be the same as the Z1/900 sprockets

Different part numbers but all the dimensions are the same, I wonder if there is any difference in materials, or whatnot that is not so easy to see? I am not too concerned with it...as they perform the same function.

Now it also appears that one of the all rubber rollers can be replaced with one of these same sprockets.

I will go with the aftermarket sprockets available as they have no rubber bits to fall into my oil pan, and therefore should outlast the factory bits. Sooo it looks like 4 of the parts on my list can be bought from APE (or Z1) fairly easily.

That leaves me with 12055-004 the other rubber roller to track down (any info on its compatibility with a 900/Z1 part?).

Anyone know if rubber dampeners for the idler assembly are the same as the z1? It would be nice to get those alum ones APE makes...as I’m starting to hate all those rubber bites inside this motor.

Well it looks like I can use the APE alum "dampeners" while the rubber dampeners are not the same as the Z1 they are the same as the kz1000 (which is what the APE part is actually for) if anyone really cares the part number for the rubber dampeners on both a 77 650 c1 and 77, 78, 79, 80 kz 1000 are 92075-289

The last rubber roller may or may not match up, it has a different part number but that didn’t matter with the sprockets (the 650 c1 part is 12055-004 while the Z1/kZ 1000 part is 12055-002)

If anyone has some parts lying around they can compare/ measure up I would be very thankful (and it may help the shallow pool of replacement parts grow).

I´m almost certain that the last roller (the bottom center roller) is the same on the 650s and the 900/1000s - the roller shaft is the same for sure, OEM no. 12052-003, fits KZ1000 (thru 1980) KZ650 KZ700 KZ750E KZ750F KZ750H KZ750L KZ750 N KZ750R KZ900 Z1 ZN700 ZR750 ZX750 acoording to Z1Enterprises.

Only difference could be the outside diameter of the roller - if anyone can measure a 900/1000 roller (12055-002) I have a nos 650 roller (12055-004) I can measure for comparison.
