Hiya guys, Ive just picked up a 86 GPZ750R, that starts fine, it appears to run ok until motor heats up to normall operating temp, then dies, will not resart until motor cools down. I am assuming its a ignition fault but hope I'm wrong. Any ideas on where to start looking and how to test the ignitor and coils and pickups etc. Thanks in advance.

Just some random thoughts --

Clogged air filter?

Valve clearances within specs?

Fuel blockage somewhere between gas tank and float bowl (allowing float bowl to re-fill during "cool off" time and run for a short time until it empties again)?

Possible obstruction in the fuel tank vent. Have you tried running with the gas cap unlatched?

Have checked out the fuel side, and all appears ok. I haven't checked valve clearances as yet but will do so this weekend.

Sounds like the CDI box is failing. Chances of both coils or both pick up coils dying at the same time are slim....

Kawasaki manual specs for testing the box are about useless. Best bet is to find one and swap it out.

go through the normal rutine, when it wont start back up ,find out if you have spark at each plug.Take the plugs out and attatch them to the wires.Place them on the eng. so they will ground . Now turn it over and check for spark.
