You have 2 styles of lock-ups. 2-stage and multi-stage. The 2 stage is basically one stage concerning the springs you use and the second is the weights on the clutch arms for locking up the plates at high rpm's. Multi-stage lock-ups ae basically the same but you can use shims on each spring to control how much pressure on the springs you have to fine tune the launch. You can use different weights on the clutch arms to determine how fast and hard the clutch locks up. Unless you have a way of monitoring the multi-stage, they are very hard to get right. A 2-stage is plenty for the average bike. On a stock motor or even with some improvements, you don't really need a lock-up. It doesn't hurt, but it won't really make any difference until you start upping your horsepower quotient. With a lock-up, you can use lighter clutch springs for easier clutch pull, but it will slip the clutch more-give and take issue here. Or use stock springs but keep the clutch from slipping in higher rpm's. This is better then having to run stiffer springs to keep clutch from slipping when adding horsepower and having to live with a hard clutch pull. That was the reasoning behind it when it was first built. You undercut your trans to keep it from jumping out of gear. KZ's are hard on second gear and this helps out. Always a good thing to do if you are increasing your horsepower. There are 3 versions of back-cutting also. Standard (for street bikes and dragbikes), race-cut(for dragbikes-they eliminate some dogs to make it shift faster) and another version where they cut it for upshifting and downshifting(for road-racing,etc.). The lock-up and back-cutting are two entirely different things for different possible problems. You can do one without the other if you so choose.
