Another Engine Swap Question
17 Nov 2005 10:36
I have a 1976 KZ900 and I have the opportunity to get a complete 1997 KZ1000 police bike. What I want to do is put the police KZ1000 engine in my KZ900. Does anybody know if this can be done without frame modifications. I'm hoping for the most part its a direct swap but there are alot of years between 1976 and 1997.
I've read the prior thread about an engine swap but wasn't able to make a clear determination.
All comments are welcome as I have to make a decision by saturday.

tw,
The cop bikes="C" and "P" series.
C=pre 1982
P=1982 and up.
The 1997 is a "P" series. P16 to be exact.
The P series uses the Kawasaki "J" engine.
I can't tell you if a J engine will bolt into your frame w/out modifacation, but I don't think it will.
Someone in here will tho.
hope this helps?

There are some threads on mounting J/P engine in drag frames that were built for KZ900/1000 over on dragbike.com forums.
You may find info there. Not having contemplated doing the swap I didn't make any notes.
I do expect to have the engine out of the frame on my 87 P in the next ten days or so and will be happy to make some photos with a scale laid in the frame. If it will help and you're not in a hurry, let me know.
I seem to recall from reading in dragbike forums that the J/P has a single center mountwhile the 900/1000 mount extends across the rear of the case and is n a different location. Suspect it'sgoinna be cut and weld to get it in.
What are you doing with the old engine?

Duck
photos would be very helpful.
i recently landed a second 1976 kz900 a ridiculously cheap price that was stored under a deck for many years which has clutch & tranny probs. i was going to use the old kz900 engine for parts or maybe bore it out to a 1075 and use the police engine in my kz900 frame.

hmmmmmm. just thinking out loud.
I'm wondering if i could take the police bike and strip it down and put my kz parts on the police frame. I just trying to figure out something because i don't want to pass up a good deal on a police bike but i really don't want to ride an all out police bike. :S

I'll make some photos on next visit to the workshop.
Have a 77 KZ1000 which AFAIK should be very close to your 900 as far as frame goes. Also have a 87 police bike. Memory tells me the frame is a bit heavier on the police bike. Plus it's got some extra metal welded on for the foot plates.
Where are you, maybe you could come by and look at the two side by side. They are in Canton GA, about 42 mile North of Atlanta.

Hows this for 'an all out police bike'?

motor mounts need to be changed,why not just build up the 900 to1075 0r 1200 and use the j motor head from police bike(bigger valves)so you dont have to butcher up a poor defenseless 900 frame?

WOW. SandRacer got one nice looking bike. That opens up a hole new line of thinking for the police bike.
