550 exhaust
07 Nov 2005 14:36
My 81 GPZ550 has a Kerker 4-1 exhaust. It has a tag on the rear portion of the muffler that says Kawasaki by Kerker. Is that anything special?
The reason I ask is I like the looks of pipes on both sides better the the 4-1. Maybe someone on this forum has a 4-2 to trade or something?
The previous owner installed Uni pods on the carbs. I have the original air baox also. the rubber connectors are pretty hard, but would probably seal. It looks like a major pain to reinstall the original air filter setup. But again, I like the stock look better than the pods. Any tips on reinstalling the air box?
I appreciate any help or ideas.

I would be intersted in your kerker if you want to trade...my stock exhaust is still in pretty good shape.

"Kawasaki by Kerker" should signify that those are the original pipes.
How about posting some pictures? We like pictures!!!

Sometimes Kerker did use the badge "Kawasaki by Kerker". It's nothing unusual, just a Kerker pipe.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

My pipes are all black, and they belong to a kz, which I've heard (don't know) that the gpz pipes were a bit more upswept than the kz pipes which go more or less straight back.

On BikeBandit the mufflers have a different part number, but I assume that's because the KZ series had chrome mufflers. The muffler brakets have the same part number for both models.
I travel during the week, so when I get home Thursday I'll take a close look at my Kerker and give you a better description of what kind of shape it's in.
I don't think there are any dents, it does need paint on the header though.
