Exhaust maintenance was created by littlebigjohn
Hi,

I bought few days ago news exhaust for my Z900...1400 euros :S . So, now I would like to take care of them..so as not to buy new ones in two or three years..

Winters are cold and damp here..what i can do to prevent rust ? do I need to remove them and get with me in my bedroom ?:)
Plunge them into oil ?

Thanks for your help.

Jean.

I've bought new ones for mine as well, and have followed a lot of threads in various places about this.
Short answer seems to be that there is not a lot you can do about it.
My understanding is that the new ones are much thinner metal than the originals were, so they start off on the wrong foot to begin with.
I must admit to dropping a teaspoon full of 2-stroke down them every now and again (only 'cos I have a big container of the stuff to get rid of).
Have also read that re-drilling the drain holes can help. I think just ride as often and as long as possible to keep 'em warm and dry, and hope for the best. After all it's only money. ;)

Hey great to see another antipodean on here. Almost a surrogate Kiwi being from Tassie :)

In NZ quite a few guys spray engine paint rated to 1400 deg C into the pipes before they run them. That generally stops the blueing and keeps them shiny. Like Sorf says - ride it often and dry the water from combustion condensation and the gutless unleaded 91.

Cheers!
