Tach oil leak was created by squints
I have an oil leak coming from the tachometer connection to the engine head. Upon inspection, I've concluded (thanks to the help of kzrider.com) that the seals/o-rings have gone bust.
I've seen replacements for this problem, but how would I go about removing my current connector piece. When I inspected the connection I couldn't seem to get the whole unit out, does it screw in and out or is it just set in place and able to slide out? help?
How do you remove and install a new tachometer connection unit?

You've got an '82 KZ1000, and I've got a '76 KZ900. But here's what my tach drive looks like.
If yours looks like this, then just remove the phillips screw, and the bracket that holds the tach drive in. Then it will just pull out.

ahhh, almost the same thing, only the bracket isn't attached to the tach piece, the bracket instead fits like a puzzle piece to keep it in place.
So you do just yank the thing out. ok ok

Mine looks like the picture above I think but I have recently had a different problem. The cable keeps coming unscrewed. All of a sudden I notice the tachs not working , I look and the cables dangling. I have beem reluctant to crank the fitting down MUCH for fear of stripping it. Last time I did actually use pliers and loctite to tighten down but I still didn't really crank on it, more than before though.Would it be easy to strip it?

If you look closely at the picture, you'll see that the boss that holds the screw (and therefore the bracket) is broken. It was this way when I bought the bike; the PO did a bad job of trying to fix it with epoxy. I've since fixed it with JB weld.
Point is, the boss probably broke because the PO reefed on the cable connector with pliers.
Be careful! That boss can't take much stress.
