KZ 650 begining engine build was created by Tweasl
Hello All,
Been searching for a good forum for Kawasaki enthusiasts and it looks like I found one! Anyway, I have a KZ 650 that I am restoring with an emphasis on engine performance and mods that will work on the road race track.
I plan on building an engine with the starting emphasis on a good cylinder head. I was told that the 750 head is a good place to start as it does not have a hemispherical Combustion Chamber and it would allow me to use a set of flat top pistons ( Better squish dynamics) instead of domes to get the CR that I want?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks Tweasl
P.S. Sorry put this post in wrong forum previously

I think whoever told you the 750 does not have a hemispherical combustion chamber was misinformed
There are some good articles on rebuilding the 650 motor in the Filebase that is listed under the KZ Information tab at the top.
The 650 head has smaller combustion chambers but the 750 head has bigger valves and ports.
Check the GPz750 Faq in the Links section on the right for ideas on building roadracing motors.

Smaller combustion chamber is good. I guess what I'm after is a head with a squish area and not having the outer edges of chamber bowl not reaching the edge of the cylinder wall. I will check the other info...Thanks

Hey tweasl - welcome aboard kzr. I have just completed a 650 upgrade similar to the journey you are embarking on. Check out this link and it can give you a bunch of info.
kzrider.com/component/option,com_joomlab...mit,20/limitstart,0/
If the link doesn't work just type the word ultimate in the archive search and you get to the link.
Here is what I did and it f*^kin' flies big time.
1977 Kz 650 Custom, bought new in '77 by my brother, only 14,000 miles currently on bike. Last year's rebuild with Wiseco 700.
Newest incarnation has Wiseco 810 kit with 10.25 pistons. Milled, ported and polished 650 head. Stock '77 cam chain and assembly. 1981 Kz 750 cams, 750 intake valves, Gpz springs. Dyna coils and Dyna ignition. Wired George Mikuni 28 carbs. Velocity stacks. MAC pipe. Bead blasted jugs, hand polished cases and covers. 14 tooth sprocket up front, new 38 in rear with new chain. Wider 130 rear tire and the factory cast rims. Bridgestone Spitfires. Barnett Clutch. Sculpted seat, LTD front fender, rear fender removed. Superbike bars, painted brake calipers, tach and speedo collars.
