I have a 79-kz 750 twin, and i am only getting 31 miles to the gallon is this normal? If this is not normal does anybody have some suggestions on what to start looking? The bike runs good I ride it to work almost every day, 25 mile round trip.
Thanks Chris

Sheesh, I hammer on them and waste a lot of gas and the worst I get is 45 mpg, with 55 mpg being normal :D

Sounds like it's time for a complete tune up, including adjusting the valve clearances.

I pretty much ride at a normal pace 65 to70 on the highway. I have been thinking of doing a complete tune up for awhile now. Is there anything that you all would recommend that I don’t have listed?

Spark plugs
Change Oil
Change Oil Filter
Replace Points
Adjust valves
Clean Carburetors
Dial in the timing

Check the resistance of the coils and spark plug caps, and scour eBay for KZ440 timing advancer/pick up/ignitor to convert your bike to electronic ignition (but I bid on every one listed for a decent price) :D

Thanks for the advice. I got a question or two.
What’s the benefit of changing the ignition. In addition, are there any good websites that show how to do this? About how much does it cost to do something like this?

It's only about a half hour job to install it, just use the KZ440 wiring diagram on www.kz400.com to see how to wire the ignitor.
I'm working on my third conversion :)

If you can't find an ignitor, loudhvx has a page on building your own using an HEI module from a GM car and three other componets. Costs less than $20 to build it.

Just for the sake of corroboration, the worst I get is 44, and my average is around 48mpg. My entire commute is city and urban though, no highway.

This sounds just like that other dude a few days ago. He ended up having a bad plug wire or cap or something, right? Pretty much running on one cyl?

I must have some problems . I will give the bike a good tune up next weekend. Hopefully that will improve my gas mileage.
