Valve lapping compound question
18 Jul 2006 10:02
Once again, here is this one-horse-town called Memphis, I can't find valve lapping compound ANYWHERE!
I've only found valve "grinding" compound in one place. I've even called several shops, even small engine repair shops and no one knows where to find the stuff other than the internet.
On ebay I've seen a brand called Clover which comes in different courses. Is there anything else out there that you folks suggest?
Thanks,
Jim

AutoZone carries Permatex brand in a tube. and Napa carries it also. Best selection I have found is on the net though.

In either place I've only been able to find grinding compound. Permatex in a tube at AutoZone; Permatex/Napa brand in a jar (water & oil-based) at Napa.
All I can say is DON'T MOVE TO MEMPHIS!
This place sucks and for many reasons.

I would have thought with Lunati in town they'd have lapping compound somewhere. But I guess they don't actually use it. Might give them a call and see if they know a source.

Grinding compound is just another name for it, same stuff, just an abrasive paste.
It is available in several different grades, from very fine (as in 600/800 grit) to really course (as in 40 grit).

im here in memphis as well... i use clover brand in the green two sided can. coarse on one side fine on the other. i havent used it in a bit but i can go out to the garage and look for it if you want to use it. it lasts a long time. i use the course to start then the fine to finish....btw it works good for rounded off nut heads to!!! put some course inside your boxed end wrench then a lil on the rounded nut. works almost everytime:) Ed
