The valves are finally adjusted.  The photos in the manual aren't very good.  Does this look right?

Is the “pin count” correct between the sprockets (remember to fit the cam cover before the tensioner)

Sorry Wookie, please explain pin count.
It's the number of chain link pins between the in and ex timing mark arrows.
On the 998cc/1089cc J type engines it is 44.

Just to add to Zeds answer, the reason for this is the guide in the cam cover. If the count is wrong when the cam cover is fitted it will allow the cam to move out of position and therefore the timing would no longer be correct but you wouldn't see the cam move as the cover would be on !!

I have the 22 plates and 44 pins.  The only concern is that the chain plate on the intake side is just below the VC mounting surface and the exhaust side is just above  the mounting surface.  Is that a concern or issue?  Thank you both very much!

Do pins 1&44 line up with the arrows on the sprockets ?

It's normal and shouldn't be an issue, they very rarely line up exactly with the gasket surface.
This is due to manufacturing tolerances, deck height or chain wear etc.
As long as you aren't a full pin out there's nothing much you can do unless you want to get very accurate with the cam timing and fit slotted sprockets.

Wookie, my best answer is to please take a look at the photos I posted.  That is not meant as being snarky or anything!  I just don't want to make a word salad response in a trying to explain.

No, I don't want to get that involved.  Do the pins line up as you say they should, in the photos I posted?
