Rotor
09 Sep 2025 07:41 - 09 Sep 2025 08:15
Been working on a KZ1100 shaft bike and getting all the bugs out of it. Looks like I need a new rotor and stator. Looks like it has seen a lot of heat cycles. There is a lot of soft black stuff on the stator and the lead wires are stiff with cracking along the length but does check out ok electrically. When I removed the pan I noticed some hard chunks of material and now I think I know where they came from. The rotor has some sort of epoxy on the edges of the magnets that is flaking off. I have heard that the rotor on this model has had issues. Im looking at the RO3 rotor from Electrex and also one from a company

Is anyone familiar with regulatorrectifier or used their rotor.

The Electrex RO3 I bought took a lot of "fitting", and soon after was returned for having a large crack develop in the magnet.
For all the hassle involved, my opinion is to stick with OEM components, especially this one!

Crazy the field coils are pedestrian and rarely fail, have a couple OEM ones if needed. Also think i have a Good OEM rotor, just in case.

Ya the coils checked out ok but they definitely have been through some heat cycles. After cleaning all the sticky black stuff all over it and seeing hoe brittle the leads were I decided just to get a new coil. I would be interested in the rotor.
Dave I did read about your experience with the RO3. I guess there is a new one RO3-02 so who knows. I think the other I mentioned are Chinese made. I asked but didn't get an answer on where they were made. Looks like the stock rotor is available but costly.
It looks like the magnets are solid buy just the red epoxy is flaking off. I was thinking of removing the remainder of the original epoxy and recoating it with JBweld. In the process of building the rotor holding tool to remove it and have a better look
Dave is that a spare one you have for sale?

Yes, and have a spare oem(?) (appears identical) stater that is missing the bullet connectors.
Aparently installed, but unrun far as I can tell.

I have the stator ordered but contemplating replacing the rotor. What kind of issues did you have with the rotor from electrux other than the cracked magnet. Did it fit properly on the taper.

The taper angle itself was correct, but it's depth was NOT!
The rotor seated too far on the crank than what the thinnest rubber spacer (of three) would compensate for.
I can't remember how many times that Electrex thing was installed (and removed) before the (incrementally sanded) spacer permitted the one-way flywheel to move, let alone spin freely with "light" friction.
🤐
It was the Electrex RO3-02 rotor model I believe...
