Engine prep for low boost turbo?
27 Aug 2025 14:01
Hi all, I would really like to turbo my kz1000, it would be more for looks and sound rather than tyre shredding performance! I would be building it myself over the winter and would like any information or knowledge anyone has? The engine is in great condition having fitted new standard pistons in it that are 1mm over. I'm only thinking of low boost (5 or 6 psi) would the engine be ok? Are they strong enough to cope? Look forward to your replies....

It will work , but understand that you are playing with fire.
Kawasaki thru dealers sold the Z1R with a aftermarket turbo kit made by ATP and did sell them with basically a stock motor.
They also offered some upgrades too which were needed . I believe NO Warranty
Your stock compression pistons are a weak spot , as is they are probably cast and not forged..
The list is extensive to insure a strong turbo motor.
As you say ' 5 or 6 pounds of boost " How are you going to control the boost to not exceed this number . ?
I know a wastegate is the answer but dialing it in may present issues
If you go ahead with the project get a good boost gage and keep a close eye on it and don't exceed 5 pounds
Have Fun
