My 82 KZ305 died
05 Aug 2025 13:33
In an attempt to correct a head gasket oil leak and high oil consumption issue, I replaced the head gasket and piston rings. Afterward, I went for a very short ride. the bike shut down and coasted to a stop with no compression.
Upon tearing down the top end if found, cam gear broke loose from cam shaft, cam chain is gone, and both exhaust valves are bent. Surprisingly the pistons look undamaged.
I don't think I will attempt a repair. My labor time and parts cost just don't justify the value of this little bike.
I never tried parting out a bike. Maybe I'll give it a try. If anyone here wants any parts off this bike, let me know.

Sorry to hear about this. I think the two bolts in the picture might have had something to do with it...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't you rebuilt that engine before? More than once? Honestly, you put up an honest effort, extending the life of that bike. I agree with time to move on. Between no parts, and/or expensive as heck parts, it comes a time...

Re: My 82 KZ305 died
05 Aug 2025 19:18 - 05 Aug 2025 19:28This bike has been my daily rider for the past 5 years. In that time, I have had the head off 3 times, trying to fix high oil consumption and leaks around the head gasket. Maybe I got sloppy this time, and didn't get things back together right. Yes, It's time to move on from this bike. I'll be spending most of my wrenching time on my newly acquired TC185, trying to get it ready for Barber.Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't you rebuilt that engine before? More than once?
