Z900 / Z1000 timing chail tensioner roller dimensions ?
30 Jul 2025 06:40
Does anyone still have an original timing chain tensioner pulley for the Z900 or Z1000 engines? I need the dimensions of this plastic pulley because I might want to make a replica out of PEEK. ( Both original Outer diameters...i`ve measured about Ø 40mm middle "rim" and 35 mm outer ?)
(Unfortunately, originals are no longer available new.)
PEEK plastic is said to be resistant to the oils in the engine, as well as the temperatures within, according to the data sheet, and also to have high abrasion resistance and sliding and good pressure resistance
I will need to made 2 units for my spare engines....Thanks in advance for your help about the correct original dimensions !

Here ya go my Friend! Diameter and width from a Genuine product. Might i add, these are not that simple to disassemble and attach your Skills to. It's not a simple riveted shaft. I rebuild the early upper towers using a hardened Honda M7 bolt for the "early" camchain towers but have to grind down the nut and have my neighbor pin weld it. Otherwise it interferes with the cam cover. Takes time though. Then while you're in there, a selection of upper towers. Early/rebuildable or again riveted. And..while a bit tough to find. When i find them original's i buy in bulk.

Clay, always helpful, thank you very much!
Yes, I'm not entirely sure if what I'm thinking up in my youthful recklessness will work 100% either...It was first just a "thought about", cause I don't have so much chance of buying original units here, unless you have a good tip on where I can find one? All the regular "Z" dealers here mark them "NA" and ebay doesn´t offer them also..I think, there must be a better connection to get these rare original parts..
The upper idler wheel and bracket, i´ve repaired and renewed a lot: Drilling out carefully the welding on one side, with an eye of drill away not too much, than with an new, or renewed wheel, fixed them, and secured it with a new weld point, ( with the original axle sitting right in the bracket,..there is a little recess in the axle, that MUST match the opposide side steel wall!)

I don't have a new one to measure but quality pattern ones are available from ZPower UK and PMC etc.
Cam chain rear tensioner. Z1-Z900-Z1000 1972-1980 (pattern)
And ZPower also do a full kit including camchain etc using ALL genuine parts but not cheap..
CAM CHAIN/TENSIONER full kit (1000) 1977-1978 (GENUINE)
You can however make a modified version that takes a stock 17 tooth idler sprocket but you need a Z650 tensioner bracket.
The 650 tensioner uses a larger diameter rubber wheel which is the same OD as the 17t idlers so they will fit straight in.
You just need to clearance the Z650 bracket to stop it fouling the barrel casting above where the chain tensioner lives.
The pic below shows left to right.
1. A stock 900/1000 tensioner.
2. A stock 650 tensioner with the area shaded black which needs removing.
3. The modified 650 tensioner bracket with 17t idler fitted.
And this pic is the finished article with my own modified idlers which is all i use now on my own engines.
