Valve noise
28 Jun 2025 09:27
Installed a new rebuilt head on my 73 Z1 and I'm getting what sounds like loose vale lash noise. The cam specs are .005 to .006 so I set them to stock at .002 to .004 and it was slightly quieter but still noisey. Reving it up it gets real loud. Didn;t sound like that with the old head and nothing else was changed. The valve keepers are mostly right at flush with the top of the valve stems as they had to be ground for clearance. Would that cause the noise? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I've never ground a valve end so I can't say if it makes a difference. I assume you used the old cam chain. Could it be stretched?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Have you done a sync on the carbs. When they are out of sync I have heard all kinds of sounds.

My valve stems had to be ground for clearance and keepers too. They are at .006'' and no excessive noise.

If your keepers are flush with the valve tip how about your retainers. I would make sure everything is below the valve tip.

I had one bucket that was not sitting strait when I first assembly them, I found that the retainer was not absolitly strait due to the springs surface and the sterm was almost flush,, I found titanium retainer that were thinner and expose the stem a bit more.

OEM head gasket(s) used?
Forty yrs. or so ago, a Z1 was brought into the shop where slmjim hung out with a tic that sounded like a valve. Tic happened every rev, got louder as motor heated up. Motor ran fine, all the usual suspects checked out OK. Owner had R&R the head to repair a broken intake boot screw, nothing else.
Finally discovered an aftermarket 2-piece Z1 head gasket that was not a precise fit had allowed the crush ring around one cylinder to slightly overhang by just a couple / three mm into the combustion chamber. Top of the piston would just barely 'kiss' that crush ring; could be seen as a slight indent on the crush ring and as a slightly polished area on the edge of the piston dome. Could not be felt turning the crank by hand.
No damage done, installed OEM head gaskets & all was good.
Likely not an issue if your Z1 head is any '72-manufacture date or, very early '73-manufacture date head that uses the one-piece head gasket; they're very precise. If it's a head manufactured mid-'73 and on, poorly-fitting aftermarket 2-piece head gaskets could be suspect.

Kaw boy, Are your kibblewhite retainers shorter than the stock ones? They appear to be flat on top vs the flat / taper on stock ones. Looks like they would make more clearance.

This awnser came from Z1 Entreprises: The thickness of the retainer where the spring sits is 1.4mm. The middle section is 3.3mm thick and the overall height is 7.6mm.

I had the original retainer machined to 1.6 mm where the spring sit. I'm not sure of the original thickness.
