Axel length gear shifter
17 May 2025 09:46
Hi, should the axle stick out further in the gear shifter? I can’t remember how it was before, but it seems odd… The cover appears to be mounted correctly, so I can’t understand how the axle could have stuck out more previously either…

That doesn't look right !! there is a groove in the shaft that the bolt should engage with

no. should be flush. remove the engine/sprocket cover to see what might be wrong. probably needs some fiddling to get it seated. mine has an insert that protrudes from the cover near the shifter shaft seal. maybe yours has it and it isn't seated/fitted properly. see ebaayy pics. some have the insert. mine also has an alignment pin near the end opposite from the seal. yours could be different.

I may be wrong, but the parts lists and pages from the FSM indicate the 750 engine makes use of additional parts for the shift lever than any of the 650s did. I am not sure that any of this will solve the issue you have. Here are a parts pic and pages from the manual.

The actual shift lever mounts foreword on reference number 92004 in the diagram below.

The cover was not mounted correctly…Now it’s flush, but this has damaged the natural indicator/detection.When I take off the cover and move the axle, I get proper detection — so it seems to be a bad connection. This hasn’t been a problem before.Maybe some force was applied to the axle when the cover was mounted incorrectly.

Just a question, is the sprocket cover from a 750 or a 650?

750,
I had the cover off during the winter and forgot how it fits on the axle. I've had the same engine for around 10 years, so I haven't assembled any new parts.
