First oil change in my 78 KZ1000. Found no cover on the top end of the oil filter. Found a diagram on the forum with part #13169. Couldn’t find it on Partszilla. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Kevin

You don´t need any cover.
It´s the same riddle about the on top or bottom position.
Just my two cents......

Cover on the oil filter? The only thing you need to worry about is the thin washer on top of the spring. So you got bottom cover, long mounting bolt goes in that, then slide on spring, then washer, then filter and your ready to mount that assembly. Many are missing that washer which get stuck to the old filter and thrown out.

I have changed oil and filter some hours ago today. My bike has no cover .  The important thing is like cra-z1  mention is the thin washer .It "glues" to the
filter when taking the old out and is easy to throw away with the old filer. Today the washer did that again and i had to pick it off the old filter and place it on the
oilfilterbolt again before installing new filter. If you install new filter without the washer you risk that the spring push the rubberseal on filter in so you got NO filtration =).

That's not an oil filter cover, it's a crankcase breather housing...

I think the Z/KZ 1015cc engines did not have one. The later J 998cc engines did.

afaik. the fence protects the filter element from oil pump pressure. the 650/750 oil pump orifice is near the bottom end of the element and the 900/1000 orifice is probably near the top. the early 900/1000 oil filter had a metal/perforated cage around the element. as shown in Rolf's pic. so a fence isn't needed.  if new oil filter doesn't have the cage. run it without the fence. then next oil change inspect the element to see if there's any pressure damage in one spot. probably won't be.  edit. but lacking the cage. consider installing a fence

His 78 KZ should be the same as the 900 engines.

It seems the factory thinks it is important. My 94' ZG 1000 Concours has one on the top of the filter.
