Cam timing kz900
16 Feb 2025 14:36
Im
in the process of degreeing the yoshimura cams that came on this 76 kz900. I installed APE adjustable cam sprockets. I got the exhaust cam set to 110 lobe center.
The intake is another story. Im maxed out in the slots and the best i can get is a 105 center.... Any ideas? I have the cams installed using the dot markings with 28 pins between marks. I will try to post the pictures showing that. Hard to believe there wouldn't be enough adjustability to get them the same at 110. Any ideas/pointers would be great. This is my first rodeo but i followed the write-up on here by joehooper

If you are 200% confident you are timing it correctly then I would suggest moving the sprocket back to centre in the slot and move the chain one tooth them once timed carefully rotate the motor by hand to check clearance

Are you sure you have the pin count correct.
The first pin which is inline with the head counts as Zero and then count 28 back to the mark on the inlet sprocket ( so in effect the 28 pin mark is actually 29 pins counting the one level with the gasket face ).
Looking at your pics retarding the inlet sprocket one tooth would put the mounting bolts towards the middle of the slots where they should be so i suspect the pin count is a tooth out as you say you have "28 pins between marks" but regardless of any timing marks it is the position of the cams in relation to the crank that matters .

I definitely counted that first pin level with the head. Even though the FSM shows exactly how to count em.....im off by one , thank you! Maybe it wasn't a 6 beer job after all, or did i have 7, i can't count.

This is my cam timing reference for the KZ 900/1000 for the122 link roller cam chain engine (15 crank/30 teeth cam sprockets) adjustment .
Only MK II engines running 124 link roller cam chain and 16 crank/32 teeth cam sprockets.
Ignore the different cam chain tower idler, i´m running a KZ1000 J cyl. head conversion mod.
Now i´m running UT cams at the moment and different ajustable cam sprockets.
Be careful when use the UT cams and the specific adjustable cam sprockets on a lower end Z1/KZ900/1000 engine.
Your must use M6 10.8 or 12.8 high grad allen head screws.
If not, the head diameter of the M6 hex screws will collide with the cam chain links in this combo !!!
I hope it helps to solve your cam timing trouble......

17 Feb 2025 13:57A slight error in the link count for the roller chains there. This is my cam timing reference for the KZ 900/1000 for the130 link roller cam chain engine (15 crank/30 teeth cam sprockets) adjustment .
Only MK II engines running 132 link roller cam chain and 16 crank/32 teeth cam sprockets.
The Z9/1000 15/30 sprockets use a 122 link roller chain and the MK2/ST 16/32 sprockets use 124 link roller chain..
