kz 440 engine swap, "BUT" Chain to Belt. was created by Squidly
My son for his first bike bought a 1983 KZ 440 belt. It came with lots of spare parts including a (good) engine. Well being a new rider and new to street bikes he ran his beloved 440 out of oil, Locked up. The spare (good) engine is chain drive. I know I could switch the bike to chain but we like the belt. The belt drive pulley fits on the chain engine but wont clear the clutch push rode. Can I us parts off the belt engine to switch the clutch linkage to the chain engine? We plan on tearing apart the belt engine and if not too damaged rebuild it.Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Can't help you with the conversion (there are others here that know the 440 intimately) with the seized motor it will depend on the level of damage as to whether or not it is economically repairable. Crank and cam bearings are probably a given (if the crank or cams are damaged it's probably destined to be a boat anchor) similarly if the pistons have "picked up" in the bore it would be a re-bore and pistons (if oversized pistons are available in the required size) which when added to the bearings, gaskets, seals, timing chain etc would be significant.

Thanks Wookie, Yeah Im thinking the belt engine is done. I believe it has a spun bearing somewhere. I Don't know for sure but there wasn't alot of metal in the oil. The metal that I did get out of the oil looks like small pieces of aluminum.

Could be piston skirt (I have seen VW pistons that had run dry and looked like they had been mauled by a “bengal tiger” !!)

Got the old engine out and the new old {good} engine in. Engine spins with starter. No Compression in right cylinder, and no spark. Time for some trouble shooting.
