KZ400H Oil Seal Kit Alternatives? was created by Dr. Frankenstein
I fired up my '79 KZ400H today for the first time since I don't know when, and nothing can show you problems like a dynamic test! I have an oil leak from my crankshaft oil seal and discovered that there are scant oil seal kits out there for the KZ400/KZ440...or am I just looking in the wrong place? Is there another oil seal kit that works/fits (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, etc), or by-the-piece oil seal that works? Does anybody know what size that seal is?

Yes, they do - for $25 apiece. I'll see what number is on the seal itself, try to reference the size that way. They're usually waay cheaper if you get the seal number off of it and get an identical one from Seals-R-Us or someplace. I just have to drain the oil, take the points and advancer off, take off the side cover, replace the seal, replace the side cover, put the advancer back in, then the points, and re-time the bike. Again. Piece of cake.

Yup, I just got three of them for $9 on Amazon:
uxcell Oil Seal, TC 25mm x 40mm x 7mm Nitrile Rubber Cover Double Lip with Spring for Mechanical Motive Axle Shaft, Black Pack of 3: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

Of course, they don't have that nifty Kawasaki logo on them like the $25 dollar one on Ebay...I guess I will Just Have to Manage...!

How did you come up with the seal size?  Did you pull an old seal out of a cover and measure it?

Generally speaking the number on the seal ( not the OE part number) is the ID-OD-depth

Looking at photos on ebay of seals, I don't see any numbers.  The Kawasaki label DOES provide this info, though.  That's nice!

Knowledge gleaned from years of rebuilding bikes. Looking at pics of a seal won't do you any good, you have to hold it in your hand. A magnifying glass helps. The part number is great if you have it, but if you look closely at any seal, it has a number on it, f'rinstance 25 40 7.  In this case it's 25mm ID, 40MM OD, and 7mm thick. And yes, I did take it out and look at it. Like I said, it doesn't have that nifty 'Kawaski KZ400" logo on it - but I don't think the shaft cares.

I know this rear is limited to the this 1 bike.
But, when listed? For the Kawasaki LTD? If no interest?
I will strip the Kaw stuff off and sell the 2 blank rims to the Harley People.
