Shimming the crank (KZ440) was created by Michi
Just wondering, suppose you have excessive end play/float on a KZ440 crank (on a bike that worked). Could you shim it with precise shims (where would you get them)? I'm thinking ahead a bit here. Thanks

How do you know it is loose?
What condition are your bearings?
Does it knock?
Get some plasti-gauge and check your clearances.
By the time you buy several rolls of shim stock to find the size you need you could of bought a good crank and some bearings.

I absolutely do not know it's loose.
I am pulling this engine apart necessarily (I have to as it has a piston and rings failure and needs pieces of metal plucked out) and when it's open I'm going to measure everything with a view to sorting everything and making sure it's all in spec. When I measure it, I'll know. But, tbh, yeah I think it's going to be out of spec. I will measure - I'm not just saying that for no reason. It is a high mileage engine. I have the gauge and the tools and I can measure.
I just want to know the process. You reckon that if it's loose the best course of action is to get a used replacement crank and some new bearings as opposed to shimming then?

Any process on engines is covered in the FSM for that model.
The FSM will also cover all the engineered wear limits for the majority of engine components.

Yes, that is true. It's in the Kawasaki service manual.
