the nipple broke off the cable … new cable is in the mail.   

is this a difficult job - replacing the cable?

Normally no.  You will need to remove your drive chain case, and likely your left foot peg and shift lever.  
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Excellent point!  I was thinking that the cover is fastened with M6 bolts, but some may use M6 screws.  You will need to buy a proper screwdriver called JIS standard.  Otherwise you can easily strip the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.  Vessel makes really nice impact JIS screwdrivers.

The Vessel screwdrivers are reasonably priced , I found mine on Amazon
And I agree with Nessism, get the impact type

I love my JIS screwdrivers.  They are a must for sure.  That said, for engine cover bolts, a standard #3 phillips head bit, as supplied in most common Impact Driver kits, work just fine for the engine cover screws.  Don't try #2, that's too small.
