Blew the engine on my KZT00AE. Can’t find another one. Is there an engine that would be easier to find that mounts up with minimal fabrication?

When you say "blew the engine" what has failed (it may be more cost effective to repair than replace given the price of early motors)

Not sure. I’m not a mechanic. My mechanic is the one who recommended I buy a new engine. He said he would have to go through the entire thing. Bottom and top end. Bore it out. Etc.

Why not  get a manual , tear it down yourself with our advise and actually knowing whats wrong ?
The cost of another engine  and adapting it to fit is a major challange

It’s easiest to get another exact same good engine and swap it in but it’s easier to repair the broken one than adapt another to fit. Neither way is cheap. But depending what’s wrong with the one you have, repair may be best.
Sometimes you can find a different engine from the same manufacturer that’ll bolt right in but that is rare.

That engine was used on all of the chain drive KZ1000 models through 1980 and the cop cycles through 1981.

It says 77 or 78 engine but....Smooth ends on the valve cover.  Top hat style head nuts.  Who knows what secrets lie inside?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

You will be very lucky indeed if you find a 45 year old motor that is "plug and play" unless you "spend big" on a rebuilt unit with receipts to prove by a competent builder. Also fitting a later motor from another model will significantly devalue your bike. Personally I would suggest in the first instance you need to delve deeper to establish what is actually wrong - what where the symptoms ?

Yep. I’m tempted to look into it more.

Sorry to hear that. I can only imagine your frustration. Not sure where you are in life, but a lot of the ppl in this forum are retirees with plenty of time, and I see some suggest you tear down the motor and do all the work yourself. You may not have time to do that, so that may be frustrating for you to hear. It would appear to me you are looking for a replacement engine, not a project.

Im sure an engine will turn up  should you do some indepth looking. I do hope you get back on the road soon.

Btw did your mechanic quote you a price on the rebuild? And what part of the engine "blew," and what are the circumstances around that?
