Gang, I did a bit of searching and didn't come up with anything on the issue in the title. I suspect someone(s) here knows the likely problem off the top of their head. Why would oil be leaking from the alternator cover on an 82 GPz 750? It is a buddy's bike and he is 60 miles away. I'm the mechanic and have kept it tuned and running for him for the last 7 years. About 20K on the odometer. Thoughts?

The rubber grommet of the stator wires get old and brittle. Some RTV or Permatex will cure the leak.

The left hand cover on the GPz750 motor is a dry cover if I remember right. That means the only place oil could come from is the crank seal......
Unless somehow the cases developed a crack.
Check the main oil galley plug just below the LH cover.

Thank you both. Yes Dr. it is supposed to be dry. My fear is crank seal or worse crank bearing deteriorating causing the seal damage. Scirocco, thanks, I'll  certainly check that first. Easiest first.

On the models that are wet behind the cover I don't think there's a crankshaft seal & there's a drain hole or holes for the oil to drain back into the engine.

The 82 KZ750 GPz has the seal & no drain holes. same as all 650/750-4 models.
