550 engine weight? was created by Zaddict
Anybody know how much a 550 engine weighs, roughly?  Just trying to figure out if I'll be able to lift one myself as I think I have an engine swap in my near future.  Found this old thread that puts a kz1000 engine at about 200 lbs.

Thanks!

Your engine is 70 Kg, it´s better to have a buddy to support the lift out of the frame! So your shaft bearing needs to replace?

Part of the problem isn't just the weight, but that they're such awkward, spiky, uncooperative lumps. Fins and studs sticking out everywhere. Presumably you want to avoid damaging either the engine or the paint on the frame.

I find that fixing some sort of "lifting handle" to the engine really helps; it can be as simple as a length of 2" x 4" strapped tightly across the crankcase, behind the cylinders, or a specially made bracket that bolts to the engine, comes out one side, up alongside the tank and then back in to the centre of gravity, letting you take the entire weight with an engine crane. This really is luxury, and it makes single handed engine removal / replacement a very well controlled process. But just the 4x2, and maybe a support to rest one end on will make matters easier.

Wearing gloves helps too.
