I’m stuck! Help. was created by Logan120
I’m at a loss and need help.
I can’t get my bike to fire up. It turns over well. It also seem to be getting fuel. It ran and rode fine then just wouldn’t start at all.
Ive replaced the battery and the ignition coils thinking that was the problem. Ive also replaced the Carbs with a new rebuilt set. The motor has also been recently rebuilt and timed.
What am I missing? What to check next?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Have you got a spark?

Yes Sir. It’s acting just like it did before replacement.

The E2 has electronic ignition. Could just be loose connections, or bad components. This manual covers your bike. It will tell you how to test components

Awesome. Thank you. would the starter be bad if it’s cranking properly?
also I tried to roll start it too and it doesn’t seem to fire either. I really am at a loss. My luck it’s the darn carbs. Even new rebuilt it seems to always be the carbs. Lol

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I'm assuming you have compression, so your problem is either spark or fuel. You can check spark by pulling each plug and cranking the bike while grounding the side of the plug against the side of your engine. If you see spark then that's not your problem. This leaves fuel as the likely problem. Pull the hose off your petcock and check to see if you have fuel flowing when the petcock is on prime. If so, then reconnect the hose and check your carb bowl drains...do you have fuel?

Grab some starting fluid.
Do you have a voltmeter?
Your plugs may also be fouling.
What do your plugs look like?

Agree with others saying it's likely spark. Check by removing a plug cap, install a known good plug in the cap, then ground the end of the plug against the engine while hitting the starter. You should see a spark. If not, you found your problem.

Update:
So I don’t seem to have spark to any plugs. Also 3 out of 4 carbs had fuel in the bowls. Not sure what’s up with the 4th one but I feel like there is enough fuel to at least fire up and run rough.
Ignition coils are new.
Stator or Alternator issue then? I’ll be getting a volt meter soon.
Anyone run into these issues before?
Thanks

Without having a meter to test your guessing at best. Replacing random parts hoping to hit the lottery gets expensive. You will need to start with some simple testing. First is battery voltage. Checking grounds. What is the voltage at the coils primary. Is there a resistor inline at the coil primary. Etc,etc, the list can get long. Best is to wait till you get a meter. In the meantime work on the fuel issue. Pull the carbs and do a thorough cleaning and set the float levels.
EDIT, Another thing you can do is start checking connections. Check each to feel if they are snug and clean of corrosion. Check the fuses.

Don't worry about your stator or alternator. The bike will run if your battery is charged, even if they aren't working correctly. At this point you don't know, but guessing isn't the right way to diagnose the problem. You need to be systematic and eliminate all of the possible causes one at a time.
I don't know the electrics on that bike, but if you checked the plugs as I suggested earlier and you have no spark on any of them then your problem is either the exciter or your ignition. The ignition is located under the right engine cover. It's connected to the exciter, which is connected to your coils. Both parts are relatively expensive so I would start by buying a used exciter on ebay and changing it. If that doesn't get you spark then you will have to change the ignition.
It's a side issue, but you need to get fuel to the fourth carb. There's no sense in starting the bike on 3 cylinders.
