Should I use gasket sealer? was created by McThing
Hi all,

I have pulled of the clutch cover, oil pan, and valve cover to check things out and replace the gaskets, as there was seepage around the oil pan and the valve cover.

I’m getting prepped to put it back together and I’m wonder what peoples thoughts are about using a gasket sealing product. I’ve seen a Honda tech discuss their branded gasket sealer and that it’s recommended by Honda for their techs to use it all the time. I have never replaced gaskets on a bike like this before but I grew up always being told to trust the gasket alone, and that sealers could introduce problems.

Anyone have any thoughts on this; pro or con, proper technique, or recommended products?

Thanks and all the best,
Brion

Don't use any sealer on paper type gaskets.
Just lightly grease both sides.
This aids settlement, reduces oil wicking and makes for easier future removal and possible re-use..

I’ve used with sealant and also with no sealant and a smear of grease in the past.

Sealant just made it harder to clean up for when refitting.

Didn’t seem to get leaks with either method so I tend to just fit them with grease these days.

Seems to be more critical that the metal faces are clean with no old bits of old gasket on them.

I use EZturn fuel resistant grease. Just enough to wet the gasket. If globs of it get into your oil or fuel it will not desolve.

I use a very thin layer of HYLOMR M on engine case gaskets. It´s an easy on and off (fuel, break cleaner), permanent "soft" plastiline sealant other than silicon sealants.
