New Oil Filter Valve verses OEM (bolt that hold in oil filter) on '81 GPz 550
11 May 2022 12:21
Hey All
Fixing up my old '81 GPz 550 and decided to replace the Oil Filter Valve (that is what Partzilla calls it anyway). To me it is the bolt that holds the oil filter in.
The original's hex head got chewed up years ago and my DIY farmer father welded an 11/16" nut to it and got me on my way. Now while I am fixing up the old girl, I am wanting to replace it so I ordered a new one from Partzilla.
The new one looks quite a lot different from the original (see picture below). The new one is thinner in construction and has it's holes in different places but most notably, the pin that holds the spring loaded mechanism inside isn't at the same location. This seems bad to me as that would seem to have some effect on the operation - wouldn't it?
Thoughts ? For now, as I want to get it back together so I can work on other things, I am going to use the OEM one and hold off using the new one until possibly next time.

Partzilla sells genuine oem parts, so the new one is likely a newer design that has superseded the original. Personally, I would stab that rascal in there and be happy.

I see now that I did NOT order it from Partzilla but instead from Z1.
I wasn't trying to save money but probably saw they had it and threw it in the cart while was ordering something else.
Thinking I made a mistake.

I would be more concerned about the size of the holes and how much oil flows through the new bolt. You can pop that pin out to take the check ball out and bore out the holes if there's any question. I've done it before.
if the threads are nice on the new one, I'd use it.

Here's one I modified for a ZRX. It'll supposedly flow more oil. I cut down the length and elongated the top holes.

The Z1 part is likely a Chinese copy, which explains the price which is about 1/2 of the factory part. It probably works fine, but in my opinion for the difference in cost not worth the probably. Kawasaki still offers the part which will be superior and for sure work.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The oil filter bolt from Z1Ent is probably an Emgo part made in Taiwan. The oem part listed at Partzilla is $34 + sh. The same oil filter bolt was used on a bunch of models. I probably would've gotten used off of EB. or be tempted by a NOS Vesrah listed there. hee.
ps: the vesrah part is made in Japan.
