Valve shims
30 Apr 2022 13:42
Hello all,
Do the 13 mm valve shims come in thicknesses greater than .320mm? I need a .350mm. The cam lobs are in tolerance, but at 40k miles they are getting close.
Thanks,
Joe

Thickest shim is 320.
Why do you need thicker ?
The clearances close up with valve and seat wear on these engines so thinner shims are required unless the valve tips have been over ground.

Bent valves, not closing all the way, can create large (false) clearance.

Zed,
Thanks for chiming in. I better rethink this as I may be adding when I should be subtracting.

01 May 2022 02:04 - 01 May 2022 02:12Are you sure you need to reduce the shim size by that much to gain clearance ?Zed,

What is your current shim sizes and clearance.
The thinnest shim is a 200 .
Sounds like you are going to need the head off for some valve work if you need thinner than that.
By the book .30mm can be taken off the valve stem tip to gain some clearance and if you know what you are doing up to 1mm can be taken off the stem, collets and retainers .
Failing that you may need to try new unworn valves , bigger valves to use the larger diameter unworn portion of the seats or J valves which have a 1mm shorter stem.
Once those options have been exhausted the head will need new seats fitted.

Maybe tell us what engine you're working on. Are the shims located under the valve tappet (bucket) and how are you measuring your clearance? And what are the clearances?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Thanks for all the help. I got it figured out and all the valves are back in spec. It took two tries, but I finally figured it out. I am waiting on a new electronic ignition and then I will know if I am done.
thanks to all 0f you for all of the help.

01 May 2022 15:17If you have a z900/1000 make sure you have 0.15mm clearance. Thanks for all the help. I got it figured out and all the valves are back in spec. It took two tries, but I finally figured it out. I am waiting on a new electronic ignition and then I will know if I am done.
thanks to all 0f you for all of the help.

The old 0.5mm to 0.10mm is incorrect and was changed to 0.10mm to 0.15mm to avoid valve seat burning.
Always aim for the highest figure or slightly above if that's where the shims take you.
Hopefully you have gone for the Dyna 'S' ignition.
These are proven and have a very low failure rate.
