PISTON RING HELP NEEDED was created by aquaholic
Hey fellow riders and mechanics, Hope you are well. I removed my jugs and took them to a machine shop to get the bores checked to see if they were out of round. They are out of round and this leads me to my big question, where can I obtain oversize rings ? I have searched everywhere and see a part number for them but all say "NOT AVAILABLE". I did a compression check before I tore it down and had 110 PSI across the board.
My next question is, (and is probably is irrelevant since the oversize rings are not available) The P/N's are 13024-5018 and 13025-5018. 13024 says it is 1.00 oversize and 13025 says it is .050 oversize. What does the 1.00 and .050 refer to in thousands lol. I assume they are metric measurements.
I'm looking for any recommendations on how to proceed with this project. I obviously don't want to spend a ton of money on this so any help would be appreciated. Thank you all, stay safe and be well. Jon

You probably need to make a few more measurements to be sure you eed a rebore. Presumably the 110 psi measurement was cold with the the throttle wide open?
If so that's not too bad.
Mostly all cylinders are out of round as the thrust fore and aft from the crank rotation wears them. How out of round are they?
You'll also need to measure the ring end gap.
All these measurements have a service limit listed in the fsm.
If you find you need to rebore at + 0.5 which is first oversize or + 1.0 which is second oversize you can get all three std, +0.5 and +1.0 complete piston and ring sets or just rings from  imdpistons.com/collections/kawasaki-piston-rings

Just bought this set. Haven’t installed them yet. Upon a visual inspection the appear nice quality. No sharp edges, burs or casting flash.

My standard bore is 69.4 mm. I have found a set of 72 mm rings through Wiseco. pistons. I need to call and see if I can use them on the standard pistons or if I have to buy new pistons also which is not in the budget. I'm going to call on Monday and will let you know what they say.
My next stupid question is the links you sent are in "L". I thought the Lira went away years ago. I'm probably wrong like my wife keeps telling me lol

72mm rings won't fit in a 69.4mm bore. 69.4 is standard bore for Z1000j. If you try to fit larger rings into a smaller bore you will need to file every ring to obtain the correct ring end gap. This is required as the rings will expand when hot and close the gap. Additionally, the ring tension will be increased and consequently wear both the rings and the bore very quickly. Once you source std rings don't forget to hone the bores to de glaze them.
IMD pistons will have the std rings. They don't list all the stock they carry on the website.  They also give 10% discount to new customers so a ring set will cost approx £100+ p&p

Now that Warren pointed out you have a J motor, the pistons I posted won’t work they are for a .5mm over bore on a Kz 70mm bore block. Sorry for the incorrect info.

Do you know if the .50 oversize rings will fit the standard piston or is a new oversize piston required. I'm assuming since it measures out to .20" that a new piston is required. Thank you, Jon

You would need new 0.5 pistons if you go for 0.5 rings only after a 0.5 rebore. There is a service limit for piston to bore gap also. Std pistons in a 0.5 over bore would be way over that limit. Why do you think you need a rebore?
If the compression readings you gave were taken with a cold engine and wide open throttle you just need to de glaze the bores and fit new rings.
If they were with a cold engine and CLOSED throttle you don't need anything new.
You said you have oval bores. 99% of engines on the road have oval bores to some extent. So how oval are they? . Post the measurements in fore aft direction and across the bore inline with the barrels at 1/2 inch up from bore base/mid point/and half inch down from bore top.

I don't know what your experience is in working on cylinders aquaholic, but there is a real art to properly measuring bores.  Unless you have done this type of work before try and take it to someone that really knows how to do this work.  It may save you a lot of money in the end.  Good luck.
