Hand cranking the 1000 shaft model
20 Mar 2022 06:05
Since I bought my bike pretty much not knowing whether my motor is good or not, I'm learning much about these bikes. I'm needing advice on what to look for as I'm removing basics to look for damage. I drained the oil looking for tell tale signs of engine failure. None there, so I'm taking the pan off. At this point, I've got most of the bolts out, and I'm letting it hang at an angle to get the dripping to stop before I pull it off.
Ignition cover is off, and I'm wanting to crank it through it's cycle, but I can only get it to turn about about a quarter turn, then it comes to a hard stop. Same thing turning it either way. I have the drive shaft off, plugs are out of it, as well as carbs and exhaust. It does turn over easily to that point. Should it rotate completely? Is there perhaps something broken off internally that's stopping it?

If you bought it as a non runner take the cam cover off and check valve timing. Kinda sounds like vavle timing is out. Resulting in valve being open when piston is on its way up to tdc and piston is hitting valve.
If it's in neutral all the gearbox and backwards should be independent to crankshaft.

20 Mar 2022 09:55Cam covers was my next step. I can't tell if it's in neutral or not. Clutch cable and handle are frozen, but I can click it down to 1st, but I'm not sure if pulling it up actually goes into neutral. If you bought it as a non runner take the cam cover off and check valve timing. Finding neutral is easy enough. All the way down, 1 up, try rolling it forwards / backwards.

Once it is in first, it cannot go past neutral unless the motorcycle is moving. Kawasaki calls the mechanism the positive neutral finder.

Don’t force it at all, or even try to push it in gear, could be valve stuck open, take of cam cover and inspect!
