Over the years what I have used to remove carbon from piston domes is Strypeeze paint stripper, fine stainless steel brushes, and lots of elbow grease.
I don't like to harm the shiny finish on the domes if I can avoid it. Also works removing carbon from combustion chambers too!!!

Be sure to clean any carbon in the ring lands.
