Z1R vs KZ1000A exhaust
06 Sep 2021 13:33
While working on my current project I'm collecting parts for a 77' KZ1000A1 repro. I have a decent exhaust lined up. It's in really good condition except for a dent next to the side stand - not ideal, but not a deal-breaker. I also have the option of getting a restored Z1R system with a new repro muffler. The Z1R system is slightly cheaper and in better condition.
I'm not really hung up on a 100% restoration. It just needs to look the part and ride well. I could live with a stock exhaust frim a Z1R.
Can anybody tell me whether the Z1R system would run well with a simple rejetting of the carbs? Does the Z1R have the same cams, carbs etc. as the KZ1000A?

AFAIK the Z1R 4-1 exhaust didn´t perfom well as the 4-2 exhaust. The Z1R 4 in 1 collector was the power bottle neck.

I'd choose the path of least resistance. Z1R system, stock, aftermarket, whatever. If the bike is not a slave to originality it doesn't really matter much. As long as the stock airbox is installed the stock jetting should work okay.

If you can get a good Z1R system cheap, buy it, I've seen those going for a small fortune online, resell it and make some money...!!

Re: Z1R vs KZ1000A exhaust
06 Sep 2021 19:53 - 06 Sep 2021 19:55The Z1R and the KZ1000A have the same engine internals, but different carbs. The Z1R has 28mm, and the 1000A has 26mm.
One issue I see with the Z1R exhaust on a KZ1000A is that the Z1R exhaust has mounting tabs on the back of the collector box. You can see them in the picture above. The Z1R frame has threaded bosses on the same bottom cross bar where the center stand mounts. The KZ1000A frame does not have these bosses, as far as I am aware. I don't see anything similar in the part drawings. I'm assuming the Z1R exhaust joints would be stressed if it were to hang free under the engine.

Thanks guys.
Niether of the systems could be classified as cheap
the Z1R is just slightly cheaper.
@DOHC: I did wonder about fitting the collector box, thanks for the picture of the frame. It looks like it will be easier to stick with the stock system (especially given that I hae a set of stock carbs).
