What's the purpose of...
30 Jul 2021 08:34 - 30 Jul 2021 08:36
... the cover installed over (or under) the oil filter?
In my 20+ years or maintaining my previous ZX-11, I always installed the said cover over the oil filter. I was surprised to see it goes under the oil filter on my KZ750L but that goes over on my KZ1000J (as on ZX11). Every other parts are about the same so I'm wondering why and what is the purpose of the shown cover.
Pictures comes from OEM parts manuals.
Thanks!

Ahh. What was the purpose of the
Nazca Lines
?. Who built the pyramids and how? Stonehenge?
Those questions pale in comparison to the Kawasaki filter cup mystery. And some bikes use the same setup with no cup at all.
Robert Stack never got to the bottom of it despite highlighting it in no less than 4 episodes of Unsolved Mysteries.

I'm going to guess and say that the purpose is to drive oil through the filter before it moves into the lube system. Without the cup (on the 1000) oil could potentially flow through the filter and on to the lube system.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I don't know. I would have guessed the fence is supposed to deflect the oil entering thru a galley to keep the oil pressure from deforming the filter or something. The KZ650 oil pan has an orifice in the oil pan & the fence is fitted at the bottom of the oil filter. I've never looked at the 1000 setup.

I´ve been ridden my Z1B for more than 25 years without the cover on top or bottom of the filter with no problems.
For me there there no technical advantage to use this oil filter bucket cover in the future, because KHI didn´t explain anything about it.
If you feel safer with the bucket(s), so put one on top and bottom, give it a try and report here......

From EB pics the 1000 oil pan doesn't have an orifice, so the oil inlet must be via the crankcase, hence the fence at the top. My guess is that the barrier isn't needed in most cases but adds an extra level of protection for the filter. Some oil filters have a mesh screen around them & don't have the fence.

The '73 to '80 900/1000 kickstart motors NEVER used that oil filter cup.
Kawasaki started using them on the non-kickstart 1000J model motors in '81.
