Kz1000P shifter jams on upshift. was created by Frankiestank
Hello,
January I purchased my first KZ and am slowly getting it roadworthy again. Shes a 1993 KZP. 12000 miles on the odo. I purchased from an old timer who bought it at auction in 2005 and quickly parked it in the back of his heated garage.
I promptly went to replace the 15yr old tires, chain, fork seals, carb boots, spark plugs and fluids... on the road again!
After my first ride I found three more issues to address before i can put it on the road. I had a burned out clutch, coutersprocket was pissing oil and finally, my shifter pedal jams.
So back into the shop and over the next few days I address these new issues.
for the shifting problem... I found that all springs in the mechanism are in good shape. It seemed like the "kick pawl spring #92083-018" was worn so that was replaced.
I buttoned up the bike hoping I had fixed all my issues and could finally put some miles on these new treads!
I was wrong and my shifter still sticks on the up (heel) shift. This bike has the rocker style heel-toe shifter. Has any member address this issue in the past?
No parts appear to be bent. Or broken. The pedal linkage appears to operate smoothly which makes me believe the issue is internal and behind the sprocket cover.
All help and guidance is appreciated. I am SO happy to join the KZ family. If any other KZP riders are here in Vancouver, BC. Let me know and let's go for a cruise!

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

When you re-assemble the engine the shift change drum must be set in neutral or the tranmission won't shift when everything is back together. Do you know if the engine has ever been apart?
If not, then I am guessing the shift forks are somehow stuck.

Have you checked the linkage? The shifter linkage needs to be properly adjusted for the heel-toe shifter to work. There is a section in the manual on how to do it but you eyeball it if you need to.

Thank you for your answer.
this motor has never been opened up.
the shifting happens flawlessly. It's just that I must "tap with my toe" to re-center the shifter before I can upshift again. The gears change without hesitation. I like what "ThatGPzGuy" says about adjusting the linkage.
Maybe It twisted while off the bike and the linkage is too short. Will be a good place to start.

I will try then after reassembly.
its possible that I accidently adjusted the length of the adjustment part. I'll try to Lengthen or shorten. Hadn't seen that chapter in the manual so I will review this evening.
I had no troubles shifting at first. Bot until I removed and reassembled the shifter that the issue occured.

I probably will be of no help but mine did not want to shift when cold with 15/50 oil. Once thoroughly warm it was fine.
Also, I hated the heal/toe shifter so I cut off the heal part then heated the front portion and bent it to make it a toe only shifter.

Got it solved!
ThatGPzGuy
, thank you. it was simply an adjustment. when the shop mounted the pedal they installed it too far one way.
no more issues and my bike is back on the road after a 15 year hiatus.

Awesome! I'm glad it worked out. Nothing like a cheap and easy fix.
Enjoy the bike and watch out for the cop bike curse.

Tell me more of the curse... I have never heard of that!
This bike has no decals on it. however I still had a cop roll down a window to talk/look at it at a red light.

Many who ride ex-cop bikes report that cagers will suddenly hit their brakes when they see you in their rear view mirrors, mistaking you for an actual cop.
