Just a quick question:
im thinking of putting an ‘88 kz550 in my 81’ kz550 frame. Will it fit?

I know that’s what I was thinking. Mrc cycles in Appleton wi has the engine listed as an 88. But I looked up the vin and it’s an 82. I posted this before diving a little deeper

You didn't mention what exact models are involved. Some models can swap motors directly with no issues, and some will have small issues.
1982 was the first year the second generation of the Kz550 motors came out. The 1982 Kz550H1 (Gpz) motor will fit into an older bike, but the carbs are different and the airbox is different. The older carbs won't fit the newer motor without modification to the intake holders, and the later airbox won't fit the older frame, so something will have to be altered. Also, it will need an oil cooler too.
If the 1982 motor is from a Kz550A or Kz550C bike, it will be a direct swap into either of those bikes, carbs and all.
The 1981 Kz550D is slightly different in that it used an oil cooler, but you could just delete the cooler if you are using an A or C motor in a D frame.
