1982 KZ1000J LTD engine buzzing noise. 2.2k to 2.5k rpm Cam chain ???

I have a 1982 KZ1000 LTD bike with the "J" motor. I am hearing a metalic buzzing noise only between 2200 and 2500 rpm. It sounds like a metallic kind vibration and is internal to the engine.
I have cleaned the cam chain tensioner and lubed it. It did make a small difference but it's still there.

What exactly does cam chain noise sound like ?

I will be taking off the valve cover and plan to check the chain and tensioner then.

What did I ask the wrong question ? I've done quite a bit of searching and come up with mostly threads dealing with 79 and earlier motors.
Considering the "J" motors should be the most available since they were manufactured until 05. I would think there would be more info on them.
Yes I Know they are the least wanted too. Oh well

It is almost impossible to diagnose a sound based on a written description, and equally difficult to describe cam chain noise. Can you take a video with sound and post it?

Arethe valves properly adjusted and are the carbs carefully synchronized? If not, they can cause a surprising amount of racket.
It could also be piston slap, bad rod bearings, a loose generator bolt, a loose clutch, or a host of other possibilities. If the bike has been drag raced a bunch with a slick, or subject to abuse, the crank could be twisted, causing an imbalance. We really need more information.

The valves are adjusted properly. I just synced the carbs. I adjusted the alternator bolt myself to 100ft lbs. Clutch is adjusted properly. I have no idea if the bike has been raced or not.
It runs far to smooth for a twisted crank. Just did a top end so I know the piston rods and piston pin bushings are not out of spec.
I suppose it could be piston slap. But only at the very narrow range I stated above. What would piston slap sound like at 2300 rpm ?
I do have filter pods on because the air box was removed when I received the bike. This sound is not coming from the carb filter area. It is internal to the engine.
If I had an older pre 79 bike I would swear this was cooling fin vibration. But as far as I know the J models never had fin dampeners.
I can hear this buzz sound very well with an engine stethoscope. BUT only at that 2000 to 2400 rpm. When riding under load that noise is just not there above and below that range.

The rubbing blocks for the cam chain can get brittle with age, and can break. That might allow the chain to slap around at certain rpms. Perhaps it is time to pull the cam cover and peek around inside with a flashlight.

Mikaw the J engine doesn't have cam chain idlers. It only has chain guides. I've had the engine open so I'm pretty sure of that.
TexasKZ I'm going to be checking the valve clearances soon so I'll peek around down in there when I do that.
At the same time I'll work the tensioner to make sure it is working properly.
I know you have to release tension when replacing the cam/valve cover.
