Shifting/Clutch issues

I have a 1979 KZ750 converted cafe racer.  When I first bought this bike it would shift just fine.  One day riding I started to have some real issues shifting into any gear, I'd end up getting stuck in a gear and couldnt go up or down.   If I did finally get into it 1st while about breaking my toes, I'd have the clutch pulled all the way in but and it would be in the friction zone trying to move on me, Then it would start to die.  When the bike is cold, she'll shift, hot she wont.  I just changed the oil too.  Not sure whats up

I would start with a "by the book" complete clutch adjustment and see what happens.

And check both ends of the cable for fraying.

Definitely get the cable properly adjusted. Also, do not stomp on the shift lever. That can bend or break the shift forks and other parts of the shift mechanism. That can be an expensive repair, necessitating pulling the engine and possibly dismantling the transmission.
