Cam shaft installation question. was created by kzed
Hey everyone, I’m putting this 79kz650 back together. The shop manual is not a direct correlation to my bike. I thing I have an early 80’s manual.
on my exhaust cam shaft I have a line with EX on the intake cam I don’t have an “IN” line as the manual supposes. So I’m having a little trouble. Could y’all take at the pictures and tell me what you think?
cam I use the sprocket bolts as a reference point? In the manual it looks like they are to run parallel to each other.

You cannot use the guide in your manual.
That is for the later Hyvo type chain not the roller chain.
You will bend valves if you rotate the engine with the cams in the current position.

I agree I do not think you can make use of that manual to set it correctly. I am pretty sure all the 77 78 and 79 650s were the same. In 80 they changed most of the modles to the HYVo cam change.
For the earlier style there should be arrows on the cam sprockets that are set to the top of the head on both cams and then a set number of chain links needs to be set between the cams. I have attached a page with a pic showing this. It is from a B1 manual, I do not currently have one for the 78 model years, but I am pretty sure it was the same for the 78 models.
