Weird engine number 1979 KZ1000 C-2 was created by Yetanotherkzrider
For the longest time I thought I had a MK.II engine since I've had to use MK.II gaskets on it, but the engine number doesn't match format that I can find on zedder. The number is KZT00AE 07 & 05. Seems extremely odd to me. Especially since It uses MK.II head and valve cover gaskets but doesn't have the extra strengthening rib coming from the oil fill cap.

I do not know this at all but may be in the past either the cases were changed or the head and valve cover were. After all is is over 40 years since new and who knows what has or has not been done to it in that time. I am not sure what you mean by 07 & 05 in your post. Are they part of the engine number?

Yeah, the engine number is KZT00AE07&05. That's what strikes me as being more than a little weird. I've never seen characters like that used in a vin or ID number of any kind. Maybe it's a combo of standard and MK.II parts and someone modified the ID to indicate that.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The extra gusset is something I look for to identify a MK2 engine quickly. Yes, the engine SN is strange. Could be a replacement engine that came to a dealer unstamped and he added the S/N.

Are you sure it's an "&", and not actually a mangled 8?
So one issue is that you should have 6 numbers after the "KZT00AE-", and you only give 5 digits. Those last six digits should be only numbers. They are a sequential serial number given to each frame and engine. That's true for all of the pre-81 serial numbers I've looked up.

Based on the zedder info it looks like they only made about 1000 police bikes in '79. That's a pretty rare bike.
I've heard folks talk about how there were early production MK2 engines that were a combination of MK1 and MK2 parts, but I have no personal knowledge.

I'll try to get a pic up the next time I go out and work on it. Poor thing has been sitting a few years since life got really busy and now I'm catching up on a lot of maintenance and rewiring it. It's very clearly "07 & 05" with spaces and all. I feel bad for neglecting the poor thing. I bought it when I was 19, almost 30 now and I haven't ridden it in a couple of years.
