Kawasaki put those oil line restrictions in a lot of their engines.
The 650/750 fours have them and the 900/1000 fours have them, some are not actual plugs but a purposeful reduction in the oil passage ID's in some spots as cast.
I recently saw this on the one side of the main oil line in the upper case of a 1000, and asked a expert if I should "open" up that hole and the guy just about had a heart attack
He went on to educate me that those restrictions are engineered to increase oil pressure at a measured spot away from the oil pump.
Obviously I did not do it.

It is good to know that this plug is not a artifact of this model motorcycle.
Since the bike is still apart I will punch the plug back out and flip it 180 degrees to obscure the passage like it was originally.
I'm disappointed I had hoped I was improving the bike so it didn't have the early failure blowing cranks as some have reported.
But delighted that you guys provided timely feedback while the bike was still apart so I can undo what I have done.
Appreciate you guys!

Does your 87 have an oil pressure indicator light? My 82 does not, which has always been a concern. There is a plug you remove to check oil pressure. I expected oil to spray out when the plug was removed, but it just kind of ozzed out. I suspect there is no oil pressure indicater on this bike because pressure is too low to activate an oil pressure switch.

Perhaps the cranks failures are because of the clogged oil strainers not mentioned in the preventative maintenance.

No, no oil pressure indicator. Pretty basic, neutral light, hi beam light, tachometer and speed.
Soon to have a phone mount so I can use google maps however.

01 May 2025 14:34That's a technological anomaly and not allowed. Get a map and compass like the rest of us.
Sure glad I wasn't smart enough to do the oil mod when I cleaned my strainer.

And by the way, actually using the map is a sign of weakness...
