Conrod shells question was created by jmax
Hi Everybody, I'm rebuilding a Z650, I thought I replace the conrod shells as a matter of fact , stripping the con rods and inspecting the shells my local mechanic said the old shells were not that bad, but as I'm this far into the engine Id rather do them anyway, I'm not sure what to replace them with.
The original shells have no paint on them whatsoever, but measuring with a point mic at three points across the width at either end and the middle (9 points in total for each shell) gives a thickness measurement of no more than 1.49mm, taken across the middle of the shells, the measurements at each shell end are no more then 1.465.
The marks on the rods and the circles on the crank don't really match up with the measurements , the table in the KZ650 manual states that the green shells are of thickness 1.485 to 1.490, the black shells are 1.480 to 1.485 and the brown shells are 1.475 to 1.480.
The advice from Kawasaki specialist is to just use the black shells.
Can anyone supply some advice?
Thanks in advance.
J.

Did you measure the ID of the rod and compare that to the OD of the crank pin in order to calculate a required shell thickness? If not that would be a good spot to start.

Definitely do as Nessism said.
To get accurate measurements make sure to torque the bolts to factory spec, then measure the ID.
It really is important that you get this right.
Also you are going to freak when you see how much main bearings are going to cost, so you want to get it right the first time.
I live in Australia and had to buy my bearings from the US, it took ages to find a set with a somewhat reasonable price, at one point I thought I was going to have to buy from several sources.
Good luck with your build. Cheers.
