Hello,
i moved my kz400 - 79 to another spot in the garage the other day and it suddenly started to leak gasoline.

I checked the tank, petcock, carburetors etc but couldnt find any leaks or wet spots.

Finally i saw where the dropd were coming from - behind, or next to the front sprocket. See picture.

The gasoline was coloured Light Brown so probably has been in contact with oil.

What has happened? Why is there gasoline leaking from the front sprocket?

What must i do? Split the engine? :(

Hope someone can help me.

Best regards

Your float needles are not closing so fuel leaks in to the inlet, down In a cylinder and then down to the crankcase.

Remove the tank, check the fuel tap. Remove the carbs and clean the float seat. Drain the oil and change the oil filter.

Don't start the bike until this is done.

It could be dripping from the #1 carb and running through the sprocket area.
Do the carbs have overflow or vent tubes that end close enough to the chain that fuel could travel along the chain?
Definitely check the oil level and sniff the oil for evidence of gasoline contamination. If the level is too high or you smell fuel in it, definitely change it and the filter before starting the engine.

Thank you so much for your replies.

Dont i need to change like a gasket or something between front sprocket axle and The crankhouse? Or is the oil thst much thicker so that it doesnt leak?

Howdy.  The engine/sprocket cover (#24 in the diagram) is open to the air, so it isn't sealed. no gasket.  The area behind there gets grungy from chain oil sling. dripping gasoline could be washing off some of the accumulated chain oil.  The fuel is probably coming from the carburetors, but it shouldn't be too hard figure out for sure.
