78 kz650 exhaust options? was created by katit
I have pretty rusted exhaust on bike I got (see pictures). It's 4->1, can you identify what it is?

Questions.. Is it salvageable or it is junk?
Other parts bike I got has those chrome runners but no mufflers. Little rust. Any use for those?

What is the best course of action now? Make it work good and make it look good. Pointers?

I don't think the 4 to 1 is junk. First I'd remove it and inspect it closely and check for thin areas. If its solid, you can get it ceramic coated. Personally id lean toward restoring it as most of the older exhaust are better made.

That header looks like a MAC. It's pretty much the lowest form of a header but serviceable enough. The stock pipes looks to have had their mufflers sazsall'ed off. Other than the removeable pieces I'd send them to the trash can.

From the pics you posted it would appear to me that either system could be usable. It is dependent upon what you want for your machine. Take the 4 into 1 off and take it to bare metal and see what you have. Any pin holes or thin locations? If not paint it with high temp header paint or get it coated. As to the stock set there are mufflers that could be added to it.

Will do. For the stock set, which mufflers can be used? Where to find? I checked all sites - NA everywhere

Amazon has universal motorcycle mufflers. Some sort of adapter will have to be welded to the stock pipes in order to mount them.

Nice, I see. Then I won't throw away those 2->1 headers for now

The photo below shows what your exhaust looked like before someone hacked off the muffler. It's one piece from new and the muffler is not removeable. Again, you would have to weld on some adapters. Personally, I'd focus on the header first.

I'd focus on trying to clean up the header and get it repainted, assuming it's not all bashed up on the bottom. Messing around with trying to get mufflers installed where the old ones were cut off would be last resort to me.
