Gear shift lever linkage replacement
13 Aug 2020 09:42 - 13 Aug 2020 12:34
Hi everyone,
I always found answers digging a bit on older posts and it has been a deep and really useful source of information, thanks already for that! Today, however, I have no clue where to look for, so here I am writing my first post. Please bear with me as, while I can handle myself but still I consider I am a novice.
I have a kz550 '82 that I bought a year ago to work as a project and learn mechanics.
I have been working recently on the external components of the clutch. Last thing I changed the clutch cable and it took a while until I adjusted the whole clutch properly. It seems that the first days I had to be too aggressive when shifting gears and the pedal went loose (basically fell off from the elbow support)
Now it wouldn't be any major problem to fix if it wasn't that when I look in the manual I just find schemas for "simple" pedals while mine has a "linkage" (you can see in the video that is a 2-parts pedal), so I don't even know if there are pieces for this repair.
As you see in the attached video, there is a black plastic piece that kept it in place the elbow of the pedal (I think this is the only piece I am looking for?)
Does anyone of you know where I can find replacement instructions for this kind of lever AND some pieces provider that works with this pedal model? Or is it a totally Frankenstein bike and this lever belongs to a different model (based on lack of information for mine in the manuals I am starting to think this might be the case...)
Thanks in advance!

Howdy. The shift mechanism appears similar to the 1981-83 KZ550 GPz models.
Some other models also had the type or something similar, such as the 84 ZN700.

Thanks! Now I know what pieces I need.
Also, given that my shift mechanism is like GPZ models, does this mean that the whole engine will also be from such model? (taking into account that the support for the pedal's elbow comes out of the engine block)

Check the engine number. one source is CycleChaos.com >> List of Kawasaki motorcycles.
The GPz models shown there begin with KZ550DE; the 550A & 550C Ltds begin with KZ550AE.
I didn't check any others. don't know what yours is.
ps: from the diagrams I don't think you'll have a problem removing the shift pedal & linkage. The splined shaft is the same on all 550 models & the shift pedal support stud fits into the engine sprocket cover which is easily removed.
