What are these for?? was created by Tmiller
Hey there everybody, new member here. Recently picked up a neat 1979 kz400 project, some assembly required. I'm having trouble identifying two components, pictured in the post. One is a threaded fitting centered on the front of the heads, I believe it is for the tachometer? If so, I don't intend to use it, can it just be capped off? The other is a post immediately to the right of the starter motor, with a single wire lead coming out if it, and I have no idea what this is supposed to run to. I come from the V-Twin side of things, so any help here would be appreciated!

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I'm not familiar with 400's but I believe you are correct about the tach cable attachment. And yes, it should be blocked off if you don't intend to use a cable tach. The other "thingy" is likely your pressure switch to warn you of low oil pressure. I would not advise to disconnect it.

1979 KZ400-H1 diagrams from Partzilla. If it's a 400B or some other 400 model, they're probably the same.

I can confirm that the threaded fitting on the front-left of the head is the tacho drive. The post on the back near the starter is the oil pressure switch, and it definitely needs to be connected. Since you have a 79, there should also be a hard oil line running from that switch up to the head. If that's not in place, the engine should not be run (because that is the top-end oil supply).
